Google Meet is now launched on Chromecast and allows video chats on your TV. All you need is a computer with Chrome, which could be ideal for meetings while you work from home.

Google has made it easier to work from home, especially during the pandemic – at least if you prefer to work in your living room.

The company is now introducing Google Meet on Chromecast, making video chats from your computer available on your TV or a cast-enabled display. You can participate in a virtual classroom or business meeting on a big screen while keeping your laptop free for notes.

You will need a computer, at least a second generation Chromecast computer and the latest version of the Chrome browser. If you have this feature, you’ll see the “Occupy this meeting” option, which allows you to specify the destination device before attending. You can start or stop staffing meetings in the middle of the session by tapping the three-button menu and selecting the appropriate option.

Meet will use the camera and microphone you specify on your computer, so you can rely on a dedicated webcam and microphone if your built-in hardware is not good enough.

Google warns that your performance “may vary”. Finally, use a wireless connection for a video conference. Still, this could be much more convenient for video chatting than attaching a display cable to your TV, setting up a separate device, or relying on multiple monitors at your desk.

The timing is good. Google is reportedly preparing to replace Duo with Meet. The switch may not happen for several years, but Chromecast’s support could be a more compelling argument for switching to Meet long before Google is ready to switch Duo off – especially when working in remote locations becomes commonplace long after the pandemic ends.
