OnePlus 8T start date, rumors, options and specifications

OnePlus may have recently announced the cheaper and more affordable OnePlus North, but that will probably not be the last we see of the company before the year is out.

We are still expecting “T” models for OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, and although they are not yet guaranteed and nothing is official yet, rumors have surfaced about the next flagship OnePlus smartphone.

Here is everything we have heard so far about the OnePlus 8T and OnePlus 8T Pro.

Release date and price

  • Before end of 2020
  • Similar price to 8 and 8 Pro likely

OnePlus usually announces its “T” smartphones towards the end of the year, although the month varies. The OnePlus 7T models were introduced in September 2019, while the OnePlus 6T was announced in November 2018.

It is therefore likely that we will see the OnePlus 8T before December 2020, but as for the exact date, we will have to wait and see.

In terms of price, the OnePlus 8 starts at 599 pounds sterling and 699 dollars in the UK and 699 dollars in the US, while the OnePlus 8 Pro starts at 799 pounds sterling in the UK and 899 dollars in the US. We expect that the OnePlus 8T and the OnePlus 8T Pro will reach roughly the same level.

  • Similar design
  • 8T Pro: IP68 rating likely

In the past, the OnePlus “T” devices were more about hardware upgrades than design upgrades – although this was not the case with the OnePlus 7T, which had a different look than the OnePlus 7.

We’re not expecting any major design changes between the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8T or the Pro models at this time, but you never know. For now, a metal housing and a glass rear panel are likely, coupled with a pinhole camera at the front and a vertically oriented, neat rear camera housing.

The OnePlus 8T Pro will probably have an IP rating and be the larger device, while the OnePlus 8T may not have an official IP rating.

  • 8T: Full HD+, AMOLED, 90Hz
  • 8T Pro: Quad HD+, AMOLED, 120Hz

Rumors have not mentioned the OnePlus 8T or 8T Pro displays, but based on the 8 and 8 Pro models, it is likely that the 8T has a lower quality display than the 8T Pro.

The OnePlus 8 has a 6.55-inch full HD+ AMOLED screen with a 90 Hz refresh rate, while the 8 Pro has a 6.7-inch quad HD+ AMOLED screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate.

We expect similar differences between the 8T and the 8T Pro, with the Pro model with a higher resolution and refresh rate probably larger than the standard model.

Hardware and specs

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus likely
  • 8GB RAM at least
  • 65W fast charging reported

OnePlus and Qualcomm have a long-standing relationship, so it is likely that the OnePlus 8T and 8T Pro will have the latest Qualcomm processor under the hood, the Snapdragon 865 Plus. Both will be 5G processors, as the 8, 8 Pro and North are all 5G processors, so OnePlus has already made a commitment here.

We expect at least 8 GB RAM in both models with at least 128 GB memory, as this is the base model for both the OnePlus 8 and the 8 Pro. However, it is likely that there will be a larger RAM and memory variant for both the 8T and the 8T Pro, as there is for the 8 and 8 Pro.

As for the battery, there are no rumors about the capacity so far, but the OnePlus 8 has a 4300mAh battery with 30T quick charge, while the OnePlus 8 Pro has a 4510mAh battery with quick charge and wireless 30W charging. It would be great to see both wireless charging this time.

We would expect similar battery capacities from the OnePlus 8T and 8T Pro, but they could offer a quick charge after a OnePlus 65W charger was certified in May 2020 – a speed that both the Oppo Find X2 Pro and Realme X50 Pro offer.

  • 8T: Triple rear?
  • 8T Pro: Quad rear?

Nothing has been rumored about the OnePlus 8T and 8T Pro cameras, but it is likely that the 8T Pro will be the better option.

The OnePlus 8 features a triple rear view camera consisting of a 48 megapixel main sensor, a 16 megapixel 16 degree ultra wide angle sensor and a 2 megapixel macro sensor. The OnePlus 8 Pro has a quadruple camera consisting of a 48-megapixel main sensor, a 48-megapixel ultra-wide angle sensor, an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor and a 5-megapixel photo sensor.

It is not yet clear whether OnePlus will stay with the 8T and 8T Pro with the same make-up or whether it will change things.
