Google has already confirmed that it will launch Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G in 2020, but it has not yet confirmed when. That might have just changed thanks to a Twitter tidbit.

Jon Prosser leaked the date for Pixel 4a and now again suggests that the release date of Pixel 5 will be September 30th. Prosser then goes on to say that Pixel 4a 5G will follow in October, without an exact date.

What we see in the system is

Pixel 5 5G (black and green)
Pixel 4a 5G (black)
– September 30

Pixel 4a 5G (white)
– October

What is not clear is whether this is the start date or the availability date. There is no news from Google about an event for the new launch, but we suspect that Google wants to take the chance to say something about the new device instead of doing everything via a press release.

Google has just launched the Pixel 4a to critical acclaim. It is a great handset, affordable and powerful with an excellent camera. The Pixel 5’s positioning has long been questioned, with suggestions that it will not be a flagship-level device with the most powerful hardware, that it will instead sit on Snapdragon 765 hardware to offer the latest services at a more affordable price.

In many ways this makes sense to Google. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, has said in the past that hardware is irrelevant in the age of AI and machine learning. Google is a large data company and its work with cameras shows that you can get great results with AI without the need for excessive camera hardware. This is beginning to be true for phones as well, with the gap between experience with flagship and mid-range devices closing rapidly.

The 5G version of the Pixel 4a is then planned for October. We suspect that this will only be the availability for this device, although if this device is also switched to the Snapdragon 765, it will be a more powerful handset overall than the version already introduced.

Exciting times are ahead for pixel fans – the question will be whether Google can compete on price with devices like the OnePlus North by moving its devices into the cheaper segment.
