ZTE has announced its intention to launch a 5G-capable smartphone with a camera under the display in China in September. It will be called the ZTE Axon 20 5G. Now it is giving everyone an early look by teasing the renderings that reveal both the front and back of the device.
The ZTE Axon 20 5G has no flashy camera on the front. There is no camera body, no hole punch, no notch, what have you. There is hardly any bezel. The above rendering, shared by ZTE Mobile Devices President Ni Fei on the Chinese social media network Weibo (via the Dutch website Tweakers), shows the phone turned off, while the lower rendering, also shared by Fei, shows the phone turned on.
There is speculation that one of the black dots seen on the “phones” in the above illustration may give an indication of where to place the camera on the Axon 20 5G, but we believe this is just a prank on pop-up cameras, pinhole cameras and strange camera positions found on other popular phones.
Remember that ZTE is not the first company to deal with the camera under the display, because Oppo and Xiaomi have also thrown their hats into this ring. But the technology itself is still largely untested. ZTE has also not yet confirmed whether Axon 20 5G will be launched in the USA, the UK or anywhere outside China.
So it’s hard to get excited about this device at the moment, but nonetheless the innovation that is being teased here is arousing our interest.
